一般说来，低温地板辐射采暖系统与建筑物同寿命（50年以上），并且其隐蔽部分在50年中是免维护的（人为因素除外），但这50年的寿命主要取决于加热管的寿命。目前，塑料管材的种类、繁多，性能各异，是不是所有的塑料管材都能保证这一点呢？这已成为各国在学术上极为关注的问题。
由于低温地板辐射采暖工程属于隐蔽工程，加之系统中通过的是60摄氏度的热水，这就意味着当加热管由于质量问题出现爆管时，建筑物的地面也就随之被破坏，损失巨大。因此，用于低温地板辐射采暖系统的加热管比普通建筑用的塑料管有着更高的要求：系统对加热管的种类、、制造工艺、质量都要进行更严格的选择。只有这样低温地板辐射采暖系统50年的寿命才能得以实现。
目前，市场上可用于低温地板辐射采暖的管材主要有PE-X管（交联聚乙烯管）、PP-R管（三型无规共聚聚管）、PERT管（耐高温聚乙烯管）、PB管（聚丁烯管），铝塑管等，这几种管材在低温地板辐射采暖系统中都有应用，并且各有特点。其他的塑料管材如CPVC、PPH、ABS、PE等由于性能无法满足低温地板辐射采暖系统的要求而不能应用。尽管铝塑复合管在《低温热水地板辐射供暖应用技术规程》中也被列入可用管材，但由于铝塑复合管中的复合剂-热熔胶的抗老化性能是一个未知数，无法确定其使用寿命。
